WHAT IS A MALA?
The malas and prayer beads are sacred tools. The word mala itself means ” heavenly garland”. A mala is a string of 108 beads of either wood, seeds, pearls or semi-precious / precious stones. It has a 109th bead which is called the Guru bead which sits at the head of the mala. It is said to be that bead that retains all the energy of your practice. A mala is a tool for helping us reciting buddhist mantra words. Malas are used for reflection, spiritual practice, prayer, meditation, cleansing of the chakra system and crystal healing. Also a blessed mala has strong power to protect us, keep us a clean, calm heart; to drive evils. Others common malas has a string of 21, 27 or 54 beads.
HOW TO USE A MALA
The mala is held with gentleness and respect, generally in the left hand. Clear your mind. Center yourself. Take a few deep breaths. It is easy to be distracted and be thinking of something else, even while you are saying your mantra. Having a clear mind helps with concentration and awareness. Set your intention. Remind yourself why you are using your mantra. Be clear to yourself. Start saying your mantra one bead is counted for each recitation of the mantra, beginning with the first bead after the “guru” bead- the larger, more decorative bead at the mala’s end. The first bead is held between the index finger and thumb, and with each count the thumb pulls another bead in place over the index finger. One mantra- one bead. Mantras are often repeated hundreds or thousands of times at one sitting. After completing a full circuit of the mala, the practitioner flips the mala around 180 degrees (this takes practice to accomplish) and continues as before, in reverse order. One aims to avoid passing over the “guru” bead, as doing so is symbolically like stepping over one’s teacher.
What is a Mantra?
Mantras are the repetition of words and phrases of special significance, and can be said either out loud or internally, are a way of introducing and focusing this vibration, or sound, in ourselves. By saying a mantra you are literally tuning yourself to resonate at the same vibrational frequency as God, or the specific deity associated with that mantra, or the healing power or intention of that mantra. Eventually, as you come to resonate at the same frequency as the mantra, the mantra gains its own momentum. At that point, as they say in Sufism, “you stop doing the mantra, and the mantra starts doing you”.Many mantras are said to have healing properties. By connecting to the mantra on an energetic level it may be possible to reprogram the affected or diseased area and allow healing to occur. Mantras are purifying. By using a mantra we can connect and vibrate with a more pure or higher level of consciousness, which is usually a chosen deity or God. The connection with this higher vibrational frequency then helps to purify the body and mind. Chakras are energetic centers in the body. Some mantras are specific for chakras, and aim to cleanse, open and purify these chakras so our spiritual energies will flow more smoothly and without obstruction.
HOW TO CARE A MALA?
In taking care of your mala remember, treat your mala with love and kindness, its meant to live for eight generations and serve as a reminder for you to live your intention. Do not wear your mala beads during exercise, in the shower or anywhere they could get wet, because can weak the thread, if you wear it every day please be gentle and if is not in use, store it in the mala bag. Mala beads are also believed to absorb and store energy, therefore it is suggested that you cleanse your mala beads from time to time. DO NOT be placed on the floor or ground, you should never let anyone else ever touch, wear or handle your mala, because it could interfere with the vibrational bond between you and your mala. Beads absorb energy, so never wear or use the beads when angry or upset. If you drop your mala by accident and it bothers you, pick it up – recite a mantra such as “Om Mani Padme Hum” or cleanse it under the sunlight or smudge with sage.
